How was the Team Cofidis jersey designed?

We speak with Amaia Rodrigo, Head of Product Design and Development at Etxeondo

Dressing a World Tour team is not just a matter of aesthetics. It’s about translating identity, heritage, and performance into a technical garment that must meet the highest demands of the international peloton. In this article, we dive into the creative and technical process behind the 2025 Cofidis jersey, developed by the Etxeondo design team.

The Creative Process Behind the Cofidis Jersey

How did the project with Cofidis begin? Did you get a clear brief, or did you start from scratch?

“We started with the brand’s corporate colors. The only non-negotiable requirement was that the sponsor’s logo needed to be clearly visible. Beyond that, we had total creative freedom. They trusted our expertise, and we proposed something entirely new. We love challenges, so it was a beautiful opportunity.”

What identity elements were essential to keep?

“The only strict requirement was the logo positioning. It was crucial to ensure visibility both in photography and on video—especially for media coverage and live broadcasts. The rest of the design was completely open. The real challenge was figuring out how to make such traditional colors feel modern and refined. It had to look fresh, but carry a new essence.”

Designing the Team Cofidis Jersey

What were you trying to express through the jersey design?

“We aimed to create a truly elegant jersey—something that really defines our style. We experimented with different shades, even introducing blue—a color that had featured in older Cofidis kits and might resonate with them.

In the end, we chose a cleaner, more refined concept. We used pure, solid colors—avoiding gradients, which are trendy, but didn’t suit this project. We explored the red color spectrum and developed a deep burgundy tone that visually elevates the jersey and makes it feel more sophisticated.

We also added yellow to the sleeves to modernize the overall look and make it stand out more in the peloton. It gives it a fresher, more distinctive appearance. To keep things visually balanced, we used black and white for the logos, which added harmony without overwhelming the design with too many colors.”

What challenges did you face along the way?

“It’s always hard to create something everyone will love. You want to be proud of your work, but you also want the team to feel connected to it. Fortunately, the whole process was smooth. The team already trusted Etxeondo—they knew our quality and our commitment—and were genuinely excited about the collaboration. Especially those who are from our region.”

How many different jerseys were developed?

“We designed five different versions tailored to various needs during the season:

Aero Jersey: the most aerodynamic version

Lightweight Jersey: ultra-light for hot weather

Training Jersey: more breathable, ideal for daily rides and workouts

Speed Suit with Dyneema bibs: featuring anti-abrasion panels for racing

Long-sleeve jerseys: both Thermo and Aero versions

Each one serves a specific purpose, but the riders use them according to their personal preferences. The goal was to offer versatility and performance in all conditions.”

What’s the difference between designing for a pro team and a seasonal collection?

“They’re two very different processes. With a seasonal collection, you have much more creative freedom: you explore trends, test new fabrics, work with innovative technologies, and think more in terms of fashion and the final consumer.

When you design for a pro team, it’s more structured. There are tighter constraints due to sponsor requirements—logos, colors, technical standards. You lose some freedom, but gain a deeper focus on performance.

Both have their own magic. And as always, it’s a team effort. All of us are hands-on in these projects, and I’m lucky to have amazing colleagues who support me through it all. Designing for the World Tour comes with responsibility, but it’s also an incredibly collaborative and rewarding experience. That’s what makes it truly special.”

Feedback from the Cofidis Team

What was the team’s feedback? Were they actively involved?

“We officially presented the new kit in Lille. We travelled there with the full range of products: jerseys, bibs, accessories, and winter gear. It was a key moment to explain the design concept, the technologies, the chamois pads, and all the technical details they needed to know.

We were joined by Haimar Zubeldia, who collaborates with us regularly. His experience in the pro peloton always adds value. During the presentation, he tried on the garments himself to show how they fit in real life—they really come to life when worn.

The feedback was incredibly positive. The riders had the chance to see, touch, and try on some of the pieces. They loved both the look and the feel of the materials. It reassured us that we were on the right track.”

Were any changes made to the design?

“Yes, but only small ones—mainly adjustments to some sponsor logos. The cut, fit, and technical construction of the garments remained unchanged.

We have a lot of experience working with pro teams, so we can anticipate most needs in advance. We know the little tricks of the peloton, and we know what works.

One of the great advantages of producing everything in-house—right here in the Basque Country—is that we can respond quickly. Any modification can be done fast and efficiently. That flexibility is crucial when you’re working with tight deadlines and high-performance demands.”

Conclusion

The 2025 Cofidis jersey is a true reflection of what Etxeondo stands for: elegant design, high-quality materials, and deep respect for cycling. It’s not just about dressing a team—it’s about projecting their spirit onto the road.

Projects like this remind us why we do what we do. Because we believe in craftsmanship, in attention to detail, and in doing things with purpose. In the end, designing a jersey isn’t just about aesthetics or performance—it’s about creating something that rides with the cyclist, through every kilometer and every challenge.
